Who is Giovanni Brusca, the Famous and Now Free Ex-Mafia Boss who Worked Together with the Italian State and Police?
When he worked together with the Italian justice he had dozens of mafiosi arrested. He was called "‘u verru", the pig, the head of the San Giuseppe Jato district, who was finally arrested in Agrigento in south Italy in the year 1996. And he was able to avoid life imprisonment by collaborating with the justice.
It was he who activated the remote control to trigger the device that caused the famous Capaci massacre. It was also he who ordered the strangulation and dissolution in acid of little Giuseppe Di Matteo, as revenge against his repentant father.
Today Giovanni Brusca, the historic boss of San Giuseppe Jato, is a completely free man: Released from prison in 2021 after serving a 25-year sentence, he also completed the four years of probation to which he had been subjected by the Surveillance Magistrates.
Called „u verru“, the pig, or more simply „u scannacristiani“, the one who slaughters people, he was arrested in Agrigento on May 20th, 1996. He was able to avoid life imprisonment thanks to his decision to collaborate with police and justice, based on the law on repentants wanted by Giovanni Falcone, the judge killed in Capaci by the bomb he detonated.
His criminal curriculum is contained in one of his sentences, reported in the book „Ho ucciso Giovanni Falcone“ by the journalist Saverio Lodato: “I personally committed and ordered over 150 crimes. Even today I cannot remember all, one by one, the names of those I killed. Many more than a hundred, certainly less than two hundred.”
During his collaboration, Brusca told the magistrates that he started out as an artificer in the 1983 massacre in which the judge Rocco Chinnici, the creator of the anti-mafia pool, was killed, and then accused himself of the Capaci attack and the killing of little Di Matteo.
He also spoke of when, in the winter of 1991, the “boss of bosses” Totò Riina ordered the strategy of attacking the State with bombs, of the Negotiation opened in 1992 with some institutional representatives, of the objective cultivated together with Leoluca Bagarella “to reach Berlusconi” through Vittorio Mangano.
His statements have been considered reliable in dozens and dozens of trials: For this reason since 2000 he has obtained the status of collaborator of justice and since 2004 he has been allowed to leave prison every 45 days to visit his family in a protected location. His contribution has allowed dozens of bosses to be arrested.
