Fratelli d’Italia (FdI), the party from Meloni, has voted against von der Leyen, Meloni: “We are consistent, we do not share the method and the merit. Our choice does not compromise the Italian role."
And she contiinuous: "Fratelli d'Italia has decided not to vote for the reconfirmation of Ursula von der Leyen as president of the European Commission. We have remained consistent with the position expressed in the European Council of not sharing the method and merit.”
Thus the Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, in a video in which she explains why Fratelli d'Italia decided to vote against the candidature of Ursula von der Leyen. According to Meloni, the contrary vote "will not compromise the collaboration that the Italian government and the European Commission have already shown they know how to carry out on many issues".
Wishing the EU commissioner "good work", Meloni said: "I have no reason to believe that our choice can in any way compromise the role that will be recognised for Italy in the European Commission. Italy is a founding country, the second largest manufacturer, the third largest economy in Europe, with one of the most solid governments among the great European democracies. And it is on the basis of this and only this that Italy's weight is defined.”
