The German magazine “Der Spiegel”, otherwise fully on the official line in Israel's war against the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and further north in Lebanon, reports: In the north of Gaza, the humanitarian situation is catastrophic. The head of the local rescue service, Fares Afana, describes the situation around the city of Jabalia and the refugee camp of the same name in an interview with the US channel CNN.
The following are some details: entire streets have been destroyed, people are starving, dead bodies are being eaten by stray dogs. “Stray dogs that are hungry are eating these corpses on the street. This makes it difficult for us to identify the bodies.”
As proof, he shared a photo with CNN, which the channel did not show in the report on Afana's description. It is said to show the remains of a boy's body that had been eaten by stray dogs.
“The Israeli forces destroy everything that represents life or signs of life,” says Afana. Thousands of children and pregnant women are trapped in the besieged area, where the Israeli military has carried out air and ground attacks in the past twelve days, the report continues.
Just before the anniversary of the October 7th Hamas attack from last year, the Israeli army launched a new ground offensive in the city of Jabalia. The more than 400.000 people remaining in the north of the Gaza Strip were ordered to flee immediately to the south (i.e., towards Israel).
Since the beginning of the attacks, the already disastrous humanitarian situation has continued to worsen. “You can see that people in northern Gaza are starving,” Afana added.
The journalist also spoke about the deteriorating conditions during rescue missions: “It is very dangerous for the media to reach this area due to the blown up roads and the direct fire of the Israeli military on our vehicles.”
Ambulances have been hit by shrapnel from Israeli artillery fire near the Yemen al-Sa'eed Hospital in Jabalia. “What is happening in northern Gaza is a genocide,” he added. His ambulance service can no longer continue its work.
The head of the Palestinian relief organization UNRWA, Philippe Lazzarini, also once again denounced the situation in northern Gaza, according to the report: “Civilians have no choice but to either starve or leave”, he said on Monday. “Too many red lines have been crossed in Gaza.”
Near the city of Jabalia is the refugee camp of the same name, which has become a complete city over the years. In the CNN report, a resident describes how Israeli bulldozers have now transformed large parts of the once vibrant neighborhood into a labyrinth of destroyed streets. “Now the camp is nothing but ashes.”
