After some vane tries in TV Meloni admitted: “I'm doing all the maths wrong, I've messed up.” Meloni's embarrassment happened at the TV “Porta a Porta”, calculator in hand, on health care numbers.
Some time before she had said in the public: “Math is not an opinion. It may be that on the left they are very poor at maths, we'll give them a calculator.”
That have been the words of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in Genoa on 25th of October 2024 at the closing event of the campaign for the right-wing election candidate Marco Bucci in the italian province Liguria.
On the same theme, cuts in healthcare, Giorgia Meloni made now a gaffe at the TV program “Porta a Porta”, just as she was trying in front of TV manager Bruno Vespa (a close friend of Meloni) to do the maths – a modern calculator in her hand.
When Vespa asked Meloni about this chapter of the last manoeuvre of the government, the Prime Minister pulled out her mobile phone and did the maths for the camera to show, as she has been repeating for days, that there are no “health cuts” in the manoeuvre. But after several attempts at her phone calculator that did not yield the desired result, including a slip of the tongue in which she unintentionally said that the per capita allocation for health care is lower today than in 2019, the premier had to admit: “EUR 198. No makes 398, I'm doing all the maths wrong, I messed up.”
Then the TV guy Vespa tried to play it down by offering to lend her his own mobile phone to redo the calculation.
In the end Meloni showed the cameras the different “official” result of 398 euro, obtained – according to what she said – from the difference between the “1.919 euro per citizen” that would be spent in 2019 and the “2.317 in 2025”.
Nobody did understand this calculation ...
